Subject to Change- 2020 Upton & Dorn Vineyards "Wild Child" Old Vine Petite Sirah & Carignan
Grape(s): 66% Petite Sirah, 34% Carignan
Vineyard(s): Planted on seven acres in the 1960s, Randy Dorn continues to dry-farm his head-pruned vines in the CCOF certified-organic style.
Farmed by John and Jan Upton, the twenty-five acres under vine at Upton Vineyard are all CCOF certified organic and were planted in the 1960s on the characteristic loam soils. Varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah, and Sangiovese.
AVA: Redwood Valley
Method: Dorn Vineyard Carignane was foot crushed whole-cluster and placed on the bottom of the stainless tank while the uncrushed whole bunch Petite Sirah was placed on top of the Carignane. We sealed the tank and took a dry-cap approach to this wine to minimize extraction (no pump overs or punchdowns for two weeks on the skins). The Upton Petite Sirah was a true carbonic maceration in a stainless tank for two weeks. The wines were pressed separately and blended together after fermentation for seven months elevage in a 5000L fiberglass tank. As always, unfined, unfiltered, zero sulfur.
